FullBucket FB-1300

FB-1300, a new free synthesizer plugin that emulates the Korg PS-3100 polyphonic analog synthesizer.

“The PS-3100 was, in fact, the first synthesizer with the classic KORG patch bay, previewing many of the well-known MS-20 features, and the first (semi-)modular polyphonic synth at all!”

With this FB-3100 free software synthesizer, they tried to get closer to the original unit, as behavior, controllers, and sound.

This plugin featuring classic two-pole lowpass filters, band-limited oscillators, a resonators section, two modulation generators, sample & hold controls, additional ‘paraphonic’ Envelope. Generator, a semi-modular patch panel, micro tuning option, additional tweaks, MIDI learn and that’s it.

The FB-3100 is a VST™2.4 software instrument for Microsoft Windows® (both 32 and 64 bit) simulating the KORG PS-3100 Polyphonic Synthesizer from 1977. It is written in native C++ code for high performance and low CPU consumption.

FreeMod is a stereo phase modulation effect capable of pulling off simple tremolo-like modulation, as well as more aggressive FM-like sounds. The interface is organized into four color-coded sections: phase modulation, LFO (which modulates the PM rate), envelope (which also modulates the PM rate), and volume controls (input volume and wet/dry levels). The plugin includes ten modulation shapes (one of which is a random modulation source) which can be assigned as the LFO and the phase modulation waveforms. The envelope is a simple attack/release affair which detects the audio on the input and modulates the phase modulation rate accordingly.

Drum Machine is a freeware drum rompler in VST/AU plugin formats for Windows and Mac OS X, featuring the drum sounds from our free 99 Drum Samples sample library. The plugin was developed by SampleScience. This initial version comes with twelve free drum kits and will be expanded with more built-in drum samples and kits in future updates (which will also free).
The plugin features eight drum slots with support for stereo and multiple mono outputs. Each drum channel comes with volume and pan controls, along with global pan/volume controls and an LFO for pitch modulation. The Low and High knobs in the upper-right corner of the user interface control the MIDI velocity range.
The drop-down menu is used for browsing through the available drum kits. More kits will be added in forthcoming free updates.

HY-MBMFX Multi-Band Effect

The free version of HY-MBMFX is a 3-band FX unit with a single FX slot on each band. The plugin comes with a long list of available effects (20 in total), including a variety of filters, delay effects, bitcrushers, distortion, modulation effects, a compressor, and even a reverb. The included effects sound very good, as is expected from an HY-Plugins release. Each slot also features input and output volume controls, stereo width and pan adjustment, a brickwall limiter, and mono, solo, and bypass switches. The top part of the GUI hosts the preset manager, A/B testing and undo/redo buttons, whereas the two knobs on the bottom part of the interface allow the user to adjust the frequency band split points.

Spectrum Analyser

An automatic compressor with “intelligent” and variable release time and ratio settings.

The effect features an auto-release algorithm which conforms the compressor’s response to the characteristics of the processed signal. To make the workflow simpler than what is normally seen in a compressor, MAX1 features only the threshold, attack, and post gain (aka output volume) knobs, along with a soft clipper switch and a peak/RMS switch for the gain reduction and volume meters. In practice, this means that the user can simply load the plugin on a channel that needs to be compressed, adjust the threshold value to set the compression amount, and adjust the attack time to taste (depending on how much or little the transients need to be emphasized).

Transpire is a transient processor. It can enhance or dampen the initial attack and the sustain (body) of sound. Transpire has been designed to work well with drums and percussion. It does not operate linearly, which means small transients are being affected relatively stronger than large transients. This is good for bringing up smaller details while not overloading on large hits. As a result, percussive tracks can sound more steady and controlled compared to traditional transient enhancers.
  • Attack enhance or dampen.
  • Sustain enhance or dampen.
  • Sensitivity controls the amount of details which Transpire can process. Small sensitivity will suit better for non-percussive material.
  • Output is hard clipped at -0.1dB.

Synsonic-Instruments BD-808

BD-808 Software-Plugin is useful for creating 808-style Bass Drum Sounds.
The underlying signal processing is based on a detailed analysis of the original 808 Bass Drum circuit.

Emulation of the NTI Nightpro EQ3D rack mount equalizer.

NTI Nightpro EQ3D is a 6-band equalizer that is best known for its boost-only “air” band which was designed for adding sheen and sparkle to vocals. The EQ also features extremely wide Q on all bands, resulting in pleasing, musical sounding boosts. Volko Audio’s free Q3D plugin emulates these features while aiming for optimized performance with a very low CPU hit. It is also completely free to download and use (activation required), unlike its hardware counterpart which costs anywhere between $1,500 and $1,800 in used condition.

Q3D copies the values and curves of each band found on the original NTI Nightpro EQ3D equalizer. The first five bands are set to 10 Hz, 40 Hz, 160 Hz, 650 Hz, and 2.5 kHz, whereas the “air” band comes with five preset cutoff frequencies (2.5 kHz, 5 kHz, 10 kHz, 20 kHz, and 40 kHz).

Throb clock

A free plugin for all your clock needs

Throb is a free and open-source JUCE based plugin that generates clock/reset signals synchronised with the host tempo. It is currently available for Windows (VST2 and VST3, 32/64 bit) and OS X (VST2, VST3 and AU 32/64 bit).
The user interface is pretty simple: a knob to set the multiplier and three radio buttons to configure the clock resolution.
The multiplier is an automation parameter and therefore can be controlled using the respective host functionality. Both the multiplier and the resolution (ppqn) settings are serialized to the preset chunk.
You won't need a DC coupled audio interface, but please avoid sending the output of the plugin directly to your speakers/headphones.

bx_subfilter, a freeware utility for adding clarity and definition to the low-end of your mix.

The plugin is based on the common concept of using a resonant high-pass filter to clean up the extreme low end and boost a target frequency range at the same time. Essentially, the filter tames the content below the cutoff frequency and adds clarity and definition at the cutoff point. It’s a pretty neat technique and certainly a good alternative to using a combination of a non-resonant HP filter and peak filter to do the job.

bx_subfilter was developed with this specific technique in mind and I’m pretty sure that Brainworx designed its curve and behavior to translate well to processing the sub-bass frequency range. Apart from the cutoff knob (which is labeled Tight Punch on the user interface) bx_subfilter also features a fixed band-pass filter control which boosts the low end, a resonance control for adjusting the amount of volume boost at the cutoff point, and input/output gain controls.

Absession has released Filteq, a freeware 3-band coloring equalizer VST/AU plugin inspired by the Filtek MK3 vintage hardware EQ.

Filtek MK3 is a hardware equalizer from the 1970s, manufactured by the Swiss company FILTEK Labo SA based on the original design by Stefan Sulke. Designed primarily for use as broadcast modules, Filter MK3 and other units inspired by its design later found their use in recording studios. The EQ featured transformer-balanced inputs and outputs, a bypass switch, 3 parametric bands with a 12-way frequency selector on each one, and a pair of filters.

VidPlayVST Is A Free Video Player

The user interface is simple, easy to use, and fully resizable which is great. The two buttons in the upper-left corner of the UI are used for loading the desired video file and adjusting the playback settings. From the options menu, the video can be played in full-screen mode, synced to tempo changes (a very cool feature), or muted so that it doesn’t interfere with the rest of the audio. Looping a specified section of the clip is also supported, although it needs to be activated in the options menu first.

Another neat possibility is to trigger the clip via a C note, so that you can sync different clips to different parts of the project, or cue the clip to a particular section of the project’s timeline. I also liked the fact that, since VidPlayVST is loaded as a VST plugin, the loaded file’s audio output is treated as any other audio source, meaning that it can be processed using the effects available inside the DAW. This is pretty useful for fixing a bad sounding clip quickly using advanced audio effects that aren’t available in some video editing applications. Of course, you’d still need to export the edited audio and combine it with the original video file in a separate application.

OSL Chorus

OSL Chorus, a freeware VST/AU plugin which emulates the chorus module found in the Roland Juno 60 hardware synthesizer.

OSL Chorus was designed to sound as close as possible to the original Juno 60 chorus out of the box. However, in contrast to the original unit which offered only two presets, Oblivion Sound Lab’s freeware emulation provides a range of parameters for customizing its sound. This also makes OSL Chorus an interesting, slightly more advanced alternative to Togu Audio Line’s excellent (and also free) TAL-Chorus-LX effect.

The plugin’s control scheme isn’t super-complex or anything like that, but it provides enough versatility to cover a wide range of chorusing flavors. It features LFO rate, modulation depth, and offset parameters, along with a filter cutoff control and dry/wet signal volume adjustments. The LFO controls can take OSL Chorus anywhere from a very subtle chorus effect to a rather aggressive modulation effect, whereas the filter cutoff dial works well for shaping the tone of the effect. This makes OSL Chorus a reasonably flexible chorus unit, much more so than its hardware counterpart. It’s also worth mentioning the the plugin can process both stereo and mono audio sources, meaning that it can be used for adding width to your mono recordings.

The interface looks nice and clean, with a color scheme which only ever so slightly resembles the synthesizer that inspired it. I’d prefer to see those classic Juno blue and yellow highlights, simply for the nostalgia effect. There’s nothing technically wrong with the GUI, though, and it’s a joy to use. The CPU usage (or lack thereof, to be precise) is another good reason to add OSL Chorus to your plugin arsenal.

VHL-3C Pultec eq

VHL-3C, a freeware vintage Pultec-style filter effect.

VHL-3C is based on Black Rooster Audio’s component-based circuit simulation technology which was used to emulate the classic Pultec passive filter design. The plugin is suitable for cleaning up the high and low end of the processed signal’s frequency spectrum before it reaches an EQ or a compressor. The emulated filters sounds very natural and transparent, making them more suitable for use on certain types of audio material compared to a standard parametric EQ (most of which have built-in high-pass and low-pass filters).

The control scheme is very simple and intuitive. There’s a bypass switch, two cutoff knobs (one for each filter), and a switch for adjusting the filter slope. The cutoff knobs aren’t smooth. There’s a range of preset values to choose from, along with the “OFF” setting for each filter. The high-pass filter ranges from 50 Hz to 2 kHz, whereas the low-pass filter ranges from 1.5 kHz to 15 kHz.

Thump2 sub bass enhancer

Thump2 is basically a sub bass generator/enhancer effect powered by a couple of envelope driven oscillators that respond independently to the audio signal on the input. It is possible to control the attack and sustain of the amplitude and pitch envelopes, as well as to mix the processed and dry signal on the output. The plugin also provides detailed metering of both oscillators, making it easier to understand how the envelope followers respond to the signal on the input.

The user interface looks nice and comes in three different sizes that can be switched between on the fly (the GUI size control is located in the upper-left corner of the interface). It also features a built-in preset browser with twelve factory patches. The factory presets are a good way to get familiar with Thump2’s controls, along with the well-written user manual in PDF format that is included with the download.

As a mix tool, Thump2 works best for beefing up the low end of acoustic drums, sampled drums and similar percussive material where you don’t have direct control over the pitch. When used on complex material such as a full drum mix, it is advisable to load the plugin on a send channel, so that you can isolate the frequency range on the input with an equalizer. Of course, Thump2 can also be used for a range of more creative purposes, such as generating basslines and comb filter style background textures. The provided dry/wet knob is essentially important when using the plugin as an insert effect. Performance-wise, Thump2 is stable and CPU usage is very low. The plugin used around 1% of available CPU resources on a single core Intel processor during our test in MuLab 6 Free.

SK10 was designed to emulate the so-called “subkick” microphone inside your DAW. This is the microphone that captures the lowest frequencies when recording an acoustic drum kit.

Polyakov Synthesizer

Polyakov is a unique little softsynth based off a hardware synthesizer called the “Polivoks”, manufactured in the Soviet Union between 1982 and 1990. The original unit was capable of generating a wide range of sounds to work in many different genres and was also able to generate interesting sound effects for scoring.

The release of the Polyakov for Windows captures much of the sound and control of the original. It definitely has the sound of a very primitive synthesizer having only two oscillators and five basic waveforms (with the addition of white noise). The synthesizer also features standard BP/LP filters with an ASDR envelope and LFO for modulation, adjustable by the mod wheel. Also worth mentioning is the “AD repeat” feature (this one is new to me) which repeats the attack and decay cycle over and over, resulting in something similar to a customizable LFO waveform. The amount of filtering and overall volume can also be controlled via velocity.

The original unit had an external input for an additional guitar or synth that could be run through the mixer and processed with the synthesizer’s sound engine. In Polyakov, they’ve kept the EXT control in the mixer but it only adds a subtle saturation effect.,5732.0.html

Riviera reverb

Riviera is a hybrid algorithmic-convolution reverb plugin for modeling specular acoustic reflections in N-dimensional orthotopes. e.g. string, plate, room, tesseract, and up (vooms or volume+room for short). Normally, direct computation in these spaces is expensive but some clever maths reduced the asymptotic costs to the point of practical use (e.g. a Reverb plugin). Parameterizing these spaces and then combining them with some fast time-varying frequency decay resulted in some interesting sounding impulse responses (IRs).

Teufelsberg Reverb

Teufelsberg Reverb plugin. Put the sound of cold war surveillance into your music.

Based in a set of reverb impulse responses allowing you to use the acoustics of the main listening tower at the former NSA compound, Teufelsberg, in your own productions. Prior to the fall of the Berlin wall the compound was run by the American and British military with the main objective being to intercept and process any Soviet and Eastern Bloc communications as part of the ECHELON intelligence gathering network.
