Synister

Three oscillators (each with a choice of pulse, triangle/saw and noise waveforms), all three of which can be modulated in a bunch of different ways. For every oscillator, you can modulate the volume, pan, coarse tuning and waveform shape with up to two modulation sources (three LFOs, three envelopes and various external sources like velocity, modulation wheel, aftertouch, etc.). Needless to say, this means that you can program some seriously complex patches without ever leaving the oscillator panel.

Next up are the three envelopes (one ADSR for volume and two ADSRs for modulation) which sound very snappy and which also let you modulate the envelope speed with up to two modulation sources. It is also possible to fine-tune the attack, decay and release curves. Awesome stuff! The three available LFOs are equally cool, allowing the user to modulate the speed of each LFO and apply a fade in to the LFO signal.

Filter: Synister comes with two of those, offering four modes per filter (LPF, HPF, BPF and Ladder) and, once again, up to two modulation sources for the cutoff and resonance parameters. As all other modules, the filters can be turned off in order to reduce the CPU hit. Speaking of which, Synister is a very well optimized synthesizer and at behaves very well both in terms of stability and CPU usage.

Acolyte

Presto has released Acolyte, a freeware monophonic virtual synthesizer in 32-bit VST plugin format for Windows, modeled after the Yamaha CS-01 hardware synth.
Acolyte copies most of Yamaha CS01’s functionality, including its VCO section with oscillator shape, PWM speed, glide, and pitch controls, the VCF section with cutoff, resonance, and modulation controls, as well as the EG and LFO sections. Much like its hardware counterpart, Acolyte is an extremely streamlined synthesizer that can serve as a great learning tool for users interested in understanding the basics of subtractive synthesis. It comes with all the features required for programming basic bass, lead, and SFX patches, yet doesn’t confuse newcomers with any of the advanced stuff.

FAT Filter

FAT Filter is a super-smoth analog filter effect which was designed to keep the CPU hit as low as possible.
Its only features are cutoff and resonance knobs, and a switch to choose between the low-pass and high-pass filtering modes. If you need any additional features like filter drive, modulation, slope adjustment, or input/output gain controls, FAT Filter is not the tool for you. One pretty decent alternative is FilterCrusher, a saturated filter effect which is available for free download via BPB. But if you’re only looking for a simple utility to filter out the lows and highs in your mix or create filter sweeps with the help of your DAWs built-in automation features, FAT Filter will certainly do the trick.

Mercuriall Greed Smasher

Mesa/Boogie® Grid Slammer modeling.

Guitar processing plugin. It is a highly detailed, circuit-based model of the Grid Slammer overdrive pedal by Mesa/Boogie. Being a virtual overdrive pedal, the plugin is aimed mainly at guitar players and music producers who use distorted guitars in their music, although effects like this one can work equally well for processing virtual instruments and even hardware synthesizers.

The user interface is a replica of the Grid Slammer guitar pedal, featuring a bypass switch and level, tone, and gain knobs. The top panel adds a mono/stereo input switch and a low/high processing quality switch which toggles between 2X and 4X oversampling. The desired input gain value can be typed in by clicking the black bar at the top of the GUI.

JBR Chorus

JBR Chorus, a freeware 8-voice modulation effect.
JBR Chorus has the word chorus in its title, but the plugin’s advanced feature set allows for plenty more modulation effects than just plain old chorusing. This is reflected in the included factory presets as well, which cover various gating, tremolo, and even some fully glitched out patches. It would be nice to see a few more classic chorus patches added to the factory preset bank.

The plugin features eight independent voices, each with individual in/out gain, delay (range between 0 and 100 ms), depth, in/out pan, and pan law controls. The voices can also be soloed and muted. The real fun begins in the modulation section, though. It offers up to 50 modulators with up to 50 modulation targets for each one. At the moment, it is only possible to use LFOs and XY pads as modulation sources, although the developer has stated that future versions of JBR Chorus should also include ADSR envelopes and envelope followers.

Blue Cat's Gain Suite

This plug-in suite is a series of gain utilities which let you control the volume of one or several audio tracks in real time. The interest of these plug-ins resides in their particular features:

First, they include advanced automation MIDI control capabilities (all response curves can be fully customized). Used together with one of our analysis tools or a MIDI controller, these plug-ins let you remotely control and automate the gain of each channel of the audio signal, wherever they reside in the signal path.

Another interesting and exclusive feature is the ability to link several instances of the same plug-in: thanks to our unique data sharing technology, you can control the gain of several tracks at the same time with a single slider.

The package provides a single channel (mono or stereo) as well as a dual channel version with mid/side capabilities for independent control of the left and right or mid and side channels. It can be very useful for stereo widening/narrowing your stereo tracks.

Note: Additional information about stereo widening with mid/side processing can be found in our M/S processing paper.

Gain12

Gain12, is a simple one-knob affair that allows you to boost or attenuate the channel gain, or trim, by up to 12dB. While it does not have a ton of added features like the more versatile gain solution from Blue Cat Audio, its simple presentation, light footprint, and ease of use makes it a convenient little tool to have around. Due to its high accuracy (up to a tenth of a dB), and the fact that it can be fully automated, Gain12 might be just the plugin you need for proper gain staging in your DAW of choice.

MultiCrusher

MultiCrusher is a relatively advanced distortion effect with five different distortion algorithms. The plugin comes with two distortion slots, the first one featuring overdrive fat, overdrive weak, and decimator algorithms, and the second one featuring clip and foldback distortion. The first three algorithms only come with the amount control parameter, whereas the foldback/clipper algorithm offers gain, threshold, and multiply adjustments. Setting the multiply parameter to zero effectively puts the foldback algorithm into clipping mode.

The lower section of the interface features anti-aliasing, round, pan, and mix control parameters. The anti-aliasing functionality seems to be based on filtering rather than oversampling, keeping the CPU hit low but resulting in a noticeably duller tone. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though, as it can work well for warming up harshly distorted sounds. The mix control adds some of the original audio to the output signal, which can be useful for preserving the transients of percussive sounds or slightly fattening up a sound with some subtle parallel processing.

Overall, the plugin is easy to use and offers a nice range of distortion types.

HY-Plugins has released HY-TP2, an update of the freeware tremolo and auto-pan effect by HY-Plugins.HY-TP2 comes with an improved, resizable user interface, two additional LFO shapes and a LFO phase knob for precise timing adjustments. The envelope follower and soft clipper from the previous version are no longer found in version 2.

Located on the left-hand side of the user interface is the Mod Wave section with the LFO waveform selection panel (sinewave, triangle, ramp up, ramp down, log up, log down, square, and random), a phase adjustment knob, and a smoothing knob which smooths out the shape of the selected waveform.

The Tremolo/Panner section features the modulation rate, modulation depth, and modulation width knobs. The width knob affects the plugin’s behavior as a tremolo or a stereo auto-pan effect. The filter section features a pair of one filters (low-shelf and high-shelf). Finally, the Output section features the output volume dial.

ToolChain

RS-MET has released ToolChain, a free plugin that is actually many plugins in one. It acts as a shell which lets you set up a chain of effects, one processed after another in a series connection. You can also put instruments at the front of the chain.

Here's what they say: "At some point, I was just tired of maintaining a separate project for each of my plugins, so I lumped them all into one. The download archive contains a Windows VST x64 version, a Mac AU version, a support folder containing presets, sample-content, etc. and a textfile with manual installation instructions."

  • Connect an arbitrary number of RS-MET effects in series.
  • You may put an instrument at the front of the chain.
  • 9 built-in processors, more to come.
  • Supports Win/VST2/x64 and Mac/AU.
  • Replaces all older single-purpose RS-MET plug-ins.
